A nice article overviewing Montevideo. Pretty lacking in the Hotel department, but much more comprehensive in the restaurant department. Here are the thinks Jake Biddington covers: - Port of Montevideo, Uruguay
- Uruguayan Food and Drink
- Produce Market in Carrasco Neighborhood
- Nightlife in Montevideo
- Specialty Shopping in Montevideo
- Beach View in Punta Carretas Neighborhood
- Dining, Shopping and Hotel Tips

Frommers so called complete guide to Montevideo includes the following. - Attractions
- Events
- Fast Facts
- Hotels
- Introduction
- Maps
- Message Boards
- Nightlife
- Planning a Trip
- Restaurants
- Shopping
- Side Trips
Unfortnately it is pretty skimmy. "Events" showed one even in 2008 and "nightlife" gave an error 404 not found. Maps also a 404 error.I hope you have better luck. Montevideo (Uruguay, South America) | Frommers.com Tags: montevideo • travel guide • frommers • hotels • 0 Comments. - Permalink |

Wikipedia has a nice page on Montevideo, but could use some better photos especially at the begining.I wonder why the kids looking for information to use in their school reports don't use wikipedia. Though often boring they have lots of information...and for Montevideo they cover: - 20th Century
- Early History
- Education
- Geography
- Growth/economy
- History
- Neighbourhoods
- Origin of Name
- Population
- Sister cities
- Sites of interest
- Sports
- World City Formation

This "recent" visit to Montevideo by Donna Cuervo reported in Frommer's was in 2004. Almost 3 years ago.He reports... "When I arrived at the airport, I was approached by someone who offered me a taxi into the city for $35 US dollars. That sounded high". Yeah that is a bit high. Today, an Airport Taxi to Pocitos runs about US$20. A Montevideo taxi to the airport is under US$10. Donna was right when she decided to take a bus to town. Donna was delighted with her stay at the Balmoral Plaza hotel and especially liked the Mercado del Puerto. Las Palmas is a great place to pick up plants for your house and various accessories (pots, dirt, etc).Roses are pretty popular. Once you rent an apartment or buy a house in Montevideo check them out. Easy to find on the corner of Benito Blanco and 21 de Setiembre. Candombe is the name for a drum based music of Uruguay. The Afro-Uruguayan population of Montevideo originated the Candombe. Its culture origins are from the Bantu African drumming. Some tango and European influence were mixed in. Shown here is a painting by Uruguayan Artist Sisto Pascale. You can aslo enjoy the Candombe live during Carnival in Montevideo. There is a competition of Candombe groups in the Teatro de Verano during the Carnival and 80 or more groups perform in Las Llamdas a massive parade.
